What to Look for During the Visit
The most useful observations often have less to do with the facilities and more to do with the people and routines around them. Pay attention to how teachers and staff interact with children and how the school responds to the everyday situations that come with having young learners.
Some of the most useful questions are also the simplest. Ask, “What happens when a child is having a difficult day?” The answer can tell you how the school approaches children when learning does not go according to plan.
If your child is joining from another preschool, ask, “How do children who join in Grade 1 settle in alongside those who have been here since preschool?” This gives you an opportunity to understand how the school supports children who are new to the community.
Parent communication is another area worth understanding. Instead of asking only whether the school keeps parents informed, ask, “How will I hear about my child, and how often?” Is there a weekly update, a parent portal, a termly meeting, or another regular way of staying connected? Ask what the normal rhythm of communication looks like, rather than only what happens when there is a concern.
Should You Bring Your Child? Usually, yes, but with one adjustment to your expectations. A six-year-old will not help you assess academic outcomes, understand the curriculum or evaluate the school’s long term academic approach. They may enjoy the campus, classrooms or activities, but that is different from helping you assess whether the school is the right academic and developmental fit.
